The shops are listed by postcode. In Amsterdam they are organised
into ten zones and in the rest of the country by province.
Old Amsterdam (area of ACD's Amsterdam
map)
The centre of Amsterdam is very compact. Many visitors never venture beyond
the innermost Centrum district, which incorporates
the main railway station (Centraal Station) and "Red Light District"
(de Wallen). There are over 100 shops in this small area covered in the
Directory and shown on a large-scale map.
Around the outside of this area are the concentric semi-circles of the
grand canals. This arc is divided into three further zones. To the west, zone B includes the canals and the pleasant Jordaan
area beyond. The southern canal zone (C) contains
the important tourist centres around the two squares, Leidseplein and
Rembrandtplein. East of the centre, zone D is
the old docks area, Jodenhoek and Artis zoo.
Amsterdam Suburbs
Beyond this area are mostly more modern suburbs but there are two outer
districts with longer histories and, more importantly for us, concentrations
of coffeeshops. These are zone E, the Old West and zone G, the Old South, where the Albert
Cuyp market is located. The outer suburbs are divided into four large
zones (F, H, I and J). Coffeeshops are few and far between out
here.
Provinces
Amsterdam is in the province of Noord Holland along with the city of Haarlem. In
addition to the province index above, there is also an index of all towns with some coffeeshops, smartshops, growshops and headshops. |
